( WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW )

Did you know?

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) adds that women who have had breast cancer and those who are at increased risk due to a genetic history of breast cancer should seek expert medical advice about whether they should begin screening before age 40 and about the frequency of screening.

Desert Imaging is proud to offer our patients the new Gold Standard in early detection: 3D Mammography. Also known as "tomosynthesis," 3D mammography detects breast cancer sooner, provides enhanced image clarity and reduces the number of unnecessary biopsies. This system's exceptionally sharp images enable our Radiologists to detect an average of 41 percent more invasive breast cancers and reduce callbacks by up to 40 percent.
Do not wear deodorant, talcum powder or lotion under your arms or on your breasts on the day of the exam. These can appear on the mammogram as calcium spots. Describe any breast symptoms or problems to the technologist performing the exam. If possible, obtain prior mammograms and make them available to the radiologist at the time of the current exam.
Mammography is performed on an outpatient basis. During mammography, a specially qualified mammography technologist will position your breast in the mammography unit. Your breast will be placed on a special platform and compressed with a paddle (often made of clear Plexiglas or other plastic). As soon as the image is taken, the compression is released. This means minimum disconfort for patients. The examination process should take about 10 minutes.
The Screening Mammogram uses 4 images, two of the right breast and two of the left breast. The radiologist can determine if a mammogram is negative or benign. Negative means that there are cysts or nodules that are not malignant.
If the radiologist sees something on the mammogram that is questionable, a Diagnostic Mammogram may be recommended. The Diagnostic Mammogram is composed of additional images. The radiologist may order a magnification view or a compression view to see if the questionable abnormality disappears. If it remains, the radiologist may order a breast biopsy or another mammogram in 3 or 6 months. Additional imaging such as a Breast MRI may also be recommended depending on the mass seen.

The State of Texas allows Desert Imaging to perform screening mammograms without a doctor’s order because many ladies do not have a doctor. If an abnormality is found, Desert Imaging will help you find a doctor to follow your care.

If you have a doctor, we can still do a mammogram without an order, however, some doctors want to examine their patient before they allow their patient to get a mammogram. Please ask your doctor if he/she will allow you to get a mammogram without scheduling an appointment with them and without their order. Your results will still be sent to your doctor.

Deodorants appear as small flecks on your mammogram which may be confused with calcifications. We ask that you not wear deodorant. If you must wear deodorant, we will provide you with towelettes to remove the deodorant. We will provide you with deodorant when you leave.

The mammogram on the mobile unit is the same as the exam at a stand alone facility. Desert Imaging cares very much about giving you the very best quality exam and has invested in having the same excellent quality on the mobile unit. In fact, Desert Imaging designed the mobile with you in mind!

We ask you where you had your previous study because our Radiologist wants to make sure that what he sees on this year mammogram looks the same as in the previous studies. If something has changed, he/she will recommend more images, a Diagnostic Mammogram or Breast Ultrasound, to make sure the change is not suspicious. These changes correspond to the Birad classification on your report.

The American College of Radiology, ACR, and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recommend that you begin getting you screening mammogram at age 40 and every year thereafter. If you have family history of breast cancer, your doctor may recommend that you get your first mammogram at hi/her discretion or begin at 35 years old.

Mobile mammography makes it easy for ladies that cannot get away from work or do not have a way to got to a mammography center to get their mammograms because we go to you. Mammos on the Move, MOM, is available to go to your place of business, church, or event. Call (915) 577-0100 to schedule MOM at your location.

Absolutely, yes! Screening mammography is safe for women with implants. There is no need to worry that they will rupture. There will be additional views that are special for women with implants.

There may be some discomfort but a mammogram should not be painful.

CAD is the abbreviation for Computer Aided Detection. It is a way to give the Radiologist a second pair of eyes to "see" anything that might be a subtle abnormality.

Yes, all of Desert Imaging’s Mammography Techs are women. They have completed their degrees as Radiology Technicians with special training and focus in Mammography. They are certified and registered by the State of Texas to be RT(M). They are required to meet and complete a specific number of Continuing Education Units every few years to remain current with their registry.

Your experience on MOM will be the same as you receive at any of Desert Imaging’s centers. You will be treated with respect by some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

You will be asked to fill out paperwork by the hostess. You will go into the dressing room and change into your exam smock. The technician will then perform your exam. The exam time for a screening mammogram is about 10 to 15 minutes.
